ARTIST STATEMENT
Art… is a challenge to me. My inspiration started when I traveled to rodeos taking pictures. I had already developed a love for horses. I shot film and digital both. I studied the structures and contours of the forms in horses and the environment around us. Also, I became captivated with the life style of a cowboy and all it entails.
I try to express in my paintings and photography my true love of what God has given us. I use a variety of media because I can layer the painting and it shows more depth. I explore color by using harmonious colors combined with contrasting colors within the same composition. Colors are similar to life. Sometimes life looks bright, sometimes it pushes and pulls you in many directions, and sometimes there are just shades of gray.
Horses and the western atmosphere of similar subject matter intrigue me. I enjoy being outdoors and taking photographs of the natural environment. I believe the use of light can convey a mystical and dreamlike appearance. I like the more traditional ways of life and simplistic life style when people lived off the land. I think my artwork captures some of the old ways that are still part of a tradition and life styles from the older generations. There is an importance of the older ways of life that we seem to forget about. The people, rain, livestock, and nature are all core subjects God blesses us with. I am blessed with a gift God has given me and I want to share it with others.
As a whole, I delight in the expression on people’s faces when they see my artwork. I want to convey the happiness and passion I get from being in this environment. I incorporate the joy and emotion I get out of life into my art. I appreciate the simplest things in life. Life itself is very precious to me. Everyday I want to make a difference in someway. Art is another way I express myself and communicate with others. Sometimes a person does not have to say anything. The meaning is all understood in the images.
I see life as colorful, different, energized, enjoyable, therapeutic, and very positive, with many opportunities to explore. Overall, painting and photography allows me to express my personality and the happiness I am very fortunate to have in my life.
